The Story

Bristol, VA

The Bristol Police and Fire Departments of Bristol, Virginia are proud to protect the lives and property of area residents. When a Bristol man died from a drug overdose, it became his brother’s mission to provide the departments with a lifesaving tool, Naloxone. “Police and fire squad members are usually first on the scene. When someone is in the midst of an overdose, time is precious,” Chris Coffey said.

Naloxone is an auto-injection device that is used to reverse the effects of a drug overdose. The emergency medical technicians (EMT) of Bristol are already equipped with Naloxone, but are typically second or third to reach the site. “The few extra minutes it may take an EMT to arrive could mean the difference between life and death,” said Chris. Without adequate funds to equip the police and fire departments, Chris wants to purchase 100 Naloxone kits for the first responders.

With each kit costing $100, Chris hopes to raise $10,000 through Red Basket to cover the cost. “My hope is to equip our fine police and fire departments with this tool to help save the lives of those in our community who have fallen down the path of drug abuse,” he said. On August 13, Chris will be holding an event at Cumberland Square Park to spread awareness and help raise funds toward his goal. Support Chris in his effort to provide potentially lifesaving equipment to the Bristol police and fire departments through making a tax-deductible donation!
