I have no energy. A little chore seems like a huge task for me to get done.

Margie’s Many Battles

Margie Hamilton has been battling several medical conditions for many years. They have caused her a great deal of suffering and interfered with her hobbies and life. Margie’s family needs help paying for her medical bills and trips to the Mayo Clinic.

The two most important things in Margie Hamilton’s life are her family and God. She married her high school sweetheart, Mike, and they have one son. Margie enjoys going to church and spending time with friends and family, but those activities have become increasingly difficult due to her many health problems. The recent loss of her husband, who unexpectedly died December 3, 2013 after suffering a heart attack, now adds to Margie’s pain.

Margie has been battling serious health issues for twenty years. In 1993, she went to the doctor for chest pain caused by arrhythmia. After three surgeries—two ablations and a pacemaker—Margie has lived with recurring pericarditis. To correct this, her doctors inserted a pericardial window to help drain fluid. Today, Margie’s pacemaker is no longer able to track every beat like it should. In October 2013, she underwent an ablation procedure to fix this.

In addition to her heart problems, Margie suffers with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). MCTD is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s defense system attacks itself. Organs such as the lungs, heart, and kidneys may be affected. For Margie, MCTD has already affected her heart, joints, lungs, and now her kidneys. She’s had part of her right lung removed and part of her stomach. Margie is also fighting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cancer of the lymph tissue, and undergoing chemotherapy treatments. For Mike, seeing his wife battle so many health issues was most devastating.

Margie’s treatments leave her feeling very weak. “I have no energy,” she said, “a little chore seems like a huge task for me to get done.” Throughout all her struggles, Mike was a constant support for Margie. He did everything he could to make her feel better. Lafe Riggs referees basketball with Mike, which is what Mike was doing the night he passed away. “The little extra money he made from refereeing went to Margie’s treatments,” said Lafe, “He was always there for her.” In fact, every three months Mike would travel 13 hours from their home in Marion, Kentucky to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota with Margie for her treatments. These trips are very expensive, yet necessary for Margie’s care. The couple started this project together. Meeting their goal of $10,000 would help Margie focus less on bills and more on getting well and holding her family close through this difficult time. Margie is hopeful about the outcome of this project. “It would be a blessing to my whole family,” she said. Let’s help Margie with her trips to Mayo so she can get the treatments she needs to win her battles, in loving memory of her steadfast husband Mike.
