The Story

Fieldale, VA

In 1937, a recreation center was built in the charming town of Fieldale, Virginia. Giving the community access to a YMCA and later two pools, the center quickly became the town’s pride and joy. “It was promptly nicknamed 'The Y' – a place filled with love, laughter, and lots of fun,” said Fieldale resident, Caren Sims. Unfortunately, years later the recession took its toll on Fieldale resulting in the closing of the town’s mill in 2003. Without the mill there was no funding for the community center, leaving it with its doors locked and pools drained.

The center was a common gathering place for the community, providing an area to hold events and a way to cool off in the summers. Knowing how much The Y meant to Fieldale and needing a place to hold the annual Fieldale Heritage Festival, Fieldale Heritage, Incorporated Board proposed to purchase the community center building, property, and pools. The group's intent is to restore the center to its former purpose while keeping its home town touch. On October 27, the center became theirs.

Fieldale is the only recreational facility in the area. With updates made, the Fieldale Recreation Center & Pools will be able to provide a place for the area’s residents to exercise and enjoy fun recreation. The renovated facility will be fully handicap accessible. It will give children, as well as adults, the opportunity to take swim lessons and be a place of relaxation for all after a stressful week. “We want to hear people say, ‘Let’s make a splash in Fieldale,’ also, to hear them say ‘I love Fieldale,’” said Caren.

In order to accomplish this, Fieldale Heritage, Incorporated Board needs to raise $82,100 through Red Basket. The money raised will be used to repair the well and refurbish the pools and bathhouses at the center in order to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act. With your help, Fieldale will be able to regain what was once a vital component of their town and reunite as a community. No fees are charged when giving through Red Basket and every penny raised will be giving to the center. Please make your tax deductible donation today and ask others to join you in giving!
