Relief…being able to do for them what I need to do without asking everybody for help all the time

Hope 4 The Copley Family

In February of 2013 Beckie Copley wrecked her van while on her way to tend to her daughter, Hannah, who suffers from Auto-Immune Enteropathy. Without her van, Beckie must rely on the support of friends for transportation. Hannah’s wheelchair is still trapped inside the wrecked van, so she has to use her old stroller to move around. A major concern for Becky is reaching Hannah when she is at school and has an emergency. Beckie is asking for help funding the repair of her van so that she can get her family around without worry.

The Copley Family moved to Omaha in the summer of 2012 after years of commuting to the Medical Center for treatment for eleven year old Hannah, who has been living with a life-threatening auto-immune disorder. Beckie Copley is the single mother of four children including Ashley, Hannah, and Anthony. Beckie has committed her life to giving her children the best life that she can, but with Hannah’s illness it is hard to give everyone the attention they deserve. But the close-knit family loves and helps care for each other. Their ability to find happiness in the face of adversity is truly inspirational—Hannah recently had the opportunity to see one of her favorite artists in concert, Taylor Swift. Though she had to go to the concert in her old stroller and she was exhausted the next day she made an amazing memory.

This past February, an emergency caused a setback in the progress the Copleys had made since their move. Around three AM one morning, Hannah called her mom in a panic. In her rush to be by her daughter’s side in the hospital, Beckie lost control of the family’s van on the snowy roads. The van is now out of commission. Beckie has always had car insurance but since moving to Omaha she dropped her coverage down to liability coverage in order to save money.

Transportation is important for any family but it is vital for the Copleys. From numerous appointments throughout the week to something as simple as taking the kids to school, life without the van has been tough for the Copleys. One of Beckie’s biggest concerns is reaching Hannah if something comes up while she is at school. “When she is at school I am on call because the school can’t touch IV pumps. I’m sitting here wondering ‘If the school calls, God, I hope I’m able to get a hold of somebody that could get me to her.” Most of Beckie’s friends in Omaha have children with special needs or chronic illnesses of their own. They help as much as they can but are in the hospital as much as the Copleys are.

Beckie Copley needs help repairing her van, so that she can get her family everywhere they need to go without concern. For Beckie, being able to fix the van will provide her with a sense of relief, “being able to do for them what I need to do without asking everybody for help all the time…that is the best gift.” Recently, Beckie was granted a boom-lift installation for the family vehicle which will make transporting Hannah’s wheelchair easier. Let’s help Beckie repair her family’s van so that she can do what she wants: be there for her family when they need her the most.
