The Story

Portland, CT

Millie Day (81) is a kindhearted woman with a love for her family. She has four daughters of her own, three son-in-laws, five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is so proud to call each and every one of them her family. During her free time, Millie enjoys doing yardwork. She has always had a green thumb. Unfortunately, due to recent health complications, Millie has had to spend more time in the hospital than doing what she enjoys with the ones she loves most.

In January 2018, Millie was in the hospital with a severe case of pneumonia. While in the hospital she was given a flu shot. After given the flu shot, Millie developed a condition called Guillain-Barré syndrome. This is a condition where the individual’s immune system attacks the nerves. Due to the severity of this diagnosis, Millie became paralyzed. To help with her condition, Millie went through rehabilitation. She is back home, however, she has lost much of her independence.

Since her diagnosis, Millie’s life has changed quite a bit. “It’s very emotional for me because I’m a very independent person and I have always taken care of myself,” said Millie. Due to the severity of her condition, she is unable to walk or get up by herself and must use a wheelchair. Millie’s home is not handicapped-accessible. With two of her daughters living out of state, one moving, and the other residing in Connecticut, Millie is in need of assistance.

Millie hopes to raise $10,000 through to assist with the cost of a caregiver and handicap accessible home modifications. Raising these funds will allow her to get back to living a life she loves. “I will feel freedom again,” said Millie. Donate and share her story today!
