The Story

Antioch, IL

Kyle Wickert is a very outgoing, happy, energetic boy. He enjoys playing sports with his friends such as football, wrestling, baseball, basketball, and lacrosse. He is often limited in what he can do because he has epilepsy, but that has never stopped him from always loving life.

Kyle was a very healthy baby until two days before his first birthday. On July 21, 2010, he suffered his first grand mal seizure and completely stopped breathing. Paramedics were able to resuscitate him before rushing him to the hospital. Over the next month, he had three more seizures and was put on daily medication. “Doctors still have not been able to pinpoint why he has seizures,” Heather said. “His daily medication helps lessen his seizures, but he still has some type of seizure on a daily basis.”

Most of Kyle’s seizures occur at nighttime or when he falls asleep. These can be the scariest and potentially most fatal seizures since his family is not always aware he is having a seizure and cannot always be there to keep him safe. He sleeps in his parent’s bedroom on a mattress on the floor because he sometimes falls out of the bed when he has seizures.

To help Kyle, his parents reached out to Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California for a life-changing seizure alert dog. He was recently approved to receive a seizure alert dog that will trained to perform a number of functions that will give him more independence. The Little Angels service dog will be trained to sense if Kyle is about to have a seizure. His dog will then be able to alert him or retrieve the necessary help while staying with and comforting him throughout the episode. Most importantly, the service dog will provide him with unconditional love and support when he needs a friend.

Kyle’s parents hope to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to help with the cost of training his Little Angel. “Having a seizure alert dog would help give Kyle a sense of security and calmness, as well as his family,” said Heather. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help keep Kyle safe and have a new level of independence with the assistance of his service dog. Share this story today!
