The Story

Virginia Beach, VA

The Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation has been working diligently to build up the sand dunes around Little Island Park. The local Boy Scout troops have a long history of partnering with the parks and recreation department to install sand dune fences along the entire stretch of Little Island Park. To achieve Eagle Scout rank, Thomas Lindsey plans to utilize that partnership and do his part in preserving Sandbridge Beach.

For his Eagle Scout project, Thomas will install a series of 20 ten-foot-long fence sections around the north entrance to the beach. The fences will be strategically placed to catch sand that is currently filling in one of the walkways. “This will build up the sand dunes bordering the walkway, encourage visitors to stay on the designated walkway, and discourage them from damaging the sand dunes by walking over them,” Thomas said. The project is planned for May 20, 2018 and will involve at least 8 volunteers to install the fencing.

In order to complete the project, Thomas hopes to raise $800 through RedBasket.org to purchase 200 feet of fencing and 60 six-foot-long metal posts to hold up the fencing. “Sand dunes protect our beaches and make the beaches enjoyable places to relax and play,” Thomas said. Support Thomas by making a tax-deductible donation and help him protect the Sandbridge Beach sand dunes. Share his story today!
