The Open Door Mission in Glens Falls, New York exists to serve people at their point of need, cultivating personal growth and community stability. Through offering a variety of programs, the mission strives to meet the needs of those in poverty and walk with them until they are self-sustainable. With no shelter nearby and a small soup kitchen available, the Open Door Mission recently purchased a building to expand their services and reach more people in need.
The Open Door Mission has started the renovation project to make the building into a one-stop community building offering resources and tangible help to those in need. A resource center will be available to connect people with area resources. Community organizations will be able to use the day room to engage with people who may benefit from their services. The shelter will house men year-round and provide a safe house during severe weather. The expansion will also allow for more programs in the future including a larger soup kitchen, a food pantry, and a culinary arts program.
The next step in the renovation project is to install new flooring which is estimated to cost $17,000. Open Door Mission hopes to raise $7,000 through RedBasket.org to cover the cost of purchasing the flooring material. “The Greater Glens Falls Area needs a place where those in poverty can come to find the help and services they need,” said Open Door Mission President and CEO, Kim Cook.
