The Story

LOS ANGELES, CA

Douglas Forsyth (52) is a single father of two sons, Phoenix (29) and MycKinnon (14). For the last 22 years, he has been the Technical Director of the Santa Monica Theatre Arts department. He once lived a very active lifestyle and enjoyed playing the drums, riding motorcycles, and rock climbing. He was also heavily involved in Scouting where he volunteered his skills to build soap box derby ramps and cars, led hikes, and taught rock climbing. If there was something that needed to get done, he would always help get it done. Unfortunately, he is unable to do any of these activities anymore because of his limited mobility.

On June 8, 2006, Douglas was involved in a nearly fatal car accident. He was in a coma for almost two months and suffered a traumatic brain injury along with numerous broken bones. The rehabilitation process in the hospital lasted four months. Once he was released, he continued to go through in-home therapy until he was able to return to work.

Since the accident, Douglas’s life has completely changed. He needs a walker or cane whenever he has to go somewhere. His hobbies have become more focused on what he can do now with his physical limitations. “The things I can still do are a lot more difficult for me to complete and take me much longer to accomplish,” said Douglas. To improve his mobility and overall quality of life, Douglas was recently approved to receive a mobility assistance dog through Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California.

The Little Angel service dog will be trained to retrieve items that may be hard to reach, help open doors, and provide support and stability when walking. “Having a service dog with me 24/7 will ensure that I have a companion who is trained to help me when I need it and will be my closest friend so I’m not alone every day,” Douglas said. To cover the training costs, he hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and help Douglas regain some independence and mobility in his life. Hey Doug! I’m so excited for you to be adopting a service dog! After all the support and encouragement you’ve given me over the years it is an honor to be able to donate to such a wonderful cause! I can’t wait to follow the updates and hope that I get to meet your fur baby once s/he arrives :)

Thank you for your encouragement and support and encouragement is what I've done forever, but it's going to fantastic to have a service dog looking out for me. And you will be on the top of my visitors list.
