The Story

Los Angeles, CA

Erin Hobkirk (20) is the youngest daughter of Christina and Carl. During a prenatal genetic screening, they learned that Erin had a chromosomal disorder which marked the beginning of a lifelong battle with her health. Throughout it all, her parents have always been by her side and loved her for who she is.

When Erin was just eight months old, she experienced her first seizure. EEG and MRI results revealed that she had epilepsy. She started taking medication to help manage her seizures, but when she was six she went into a seizure that lasted 40 minutes. With these sudden onset seizures, Erin always has to be aware and cautious of her surroundings. Her seizures have made it difficult for her to develop her speech and forced her to rely on basic sign language and pictures for communication. She is unable to be alone and must carry medication for when her seizures last longer than five minutes. Her neurologist told her that she was one of the hardest patients to control, but suggested she look into getting a seizure alert dog.

Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California works to provide highly trained dogs to assist disabled children and adults throughout the United States. Erin was recently approved to receive a Little Angels seizure alert dog. Her service dog will be specially trained to alert her before she is about to have a seizure, get help in the event of a seizure, and stay with her throughout the episode. Her Little Angel will also be able to hold her medication. “It would be wonderful to have the alert dog to carry this medication and comfort her afterwards,” Christina said said.

Erin’s parents hope to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to cover the cost of her service dog. “The dog will be by her side the whole time which will lessen her anxiety and provide amazing relief for Carl and me,” said Christina. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and help provide a lifesaving seizure alert dog for this young lady. Share her story today!
