The Story

Snow Hill, NC

Joanna Price (40) is a loving wife and mother of two young children. She grew up on a family farm which is still one of her favorite places. She was a teacher for approximately 17 years and tried to instill a love of learning for all of her students. In her spare time, Joanna enjoys spending time with all of her family especially her children and Yorkshire terrier.

On October 6, 2017, Joanna’s world was suddenly flipped upside down. In the middle of the night, she suffered cardiac arrest while also being 35 weeks pregnant. The emergency response team was able to resuscitate her and took her to Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Once stabilized, she was transferred to Vidant Health Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina where she underwent an emergency C-section and procedure to repair her dissected heart artery.

Baby Brantlee weighed five pounds seven ounces at birth and was immediately treated in the neonatal intensive care unit. A few days later, doctors determined that he and Joanna suffered an anoxic brain injury due to the brain being deprived oxygen during the cardiac arrest. Brantlee has since made great strides in his recovery. He has been discharged and is now home with the family. Joanna, however, has had a slower recovery journey.

Following her diagnosis, Joanna received treatment at two rehabilitation facilities. Being separated from her family and missing out on spending time with her newborn baby has been very challenging. Her fragile health has also prevented her from working or participating in things that she enjoyed before the injury. Despite the physical and mental challenges of her rehab, she has made tremendous improvements in her speech and muscle control over the last three months. “Even though many of these things are traumatic, the positive thing is that I am improving,” Joanna said.

With growing medical debt, Joanna’s family and friends hope to raise $10,000 through RedBasket.org to assist with her rehabilitation costs. “Being able to relieve some of the financial burden of medical bills and rehabilitation will allow Joanna to have a better future,” said Joanna’s sister, Jennifer Bass. Support this mother in her healing journey by making a tax-deductible donation and sharing her story today!
