With half of our family in another state, it has been pretty tough on our family.
The Story

Elijah Leonard and Ashley Keene are loving parents of a young daughter, Olivia. They love spending time as a family. They were overjoyed when they had a second baby girl, Ruby Katherine “Ruby Kate” Leonard on July 13, 2017. Unfortunately, they quickly learned that their sweet baby girl had a severe medical condition.

Through a newborn screening, Ruby Kate’s results showed abnormal enzyme activity. She was transferred to Northeast Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee where more extensive testing was conducted. Due to the rarity of her condition, she was referred to Duke Children's Hospital in Durham, North Carolina where she was diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a very rare genetic disorder that can cause serious organ and skeletal damage.

Ruby Kate received a cord blood stem cell transplant at just three months old. She has since been in and out of the Duke Hospital a number of times. Ashley left her job to stay with the baby in Durham while Elijah continued working and taking care of Olivia at home in Virginia. He tries to travel to the hospital every weekend to be with them, but the hospital is nearly 300 miles away from their home. “With half of our family in another state, it has been pretty tough on our family,” said Elijah. Their friends and family have rallied around them to offer as much assistance as possible.

On January 5, 2018, Ruby Kate was released from the hospital, but remains in the Durham area as she continues to receive treatment. The family hopes that she will be able to finally go home within the next month. They will still commute back and forth for her weekly and monthly treatment and check-up appointments. Elijah and Ashley hope to raise $9,500 through RedBasket.org to help with her ongoing medical and travel expenses. “Hopefully this will decrease the financial burden of traveling as much as we do,” Elijah said. Rally behind Ruby Kate and her family by making a tax-deductible donation and sharing her story today!
