The Story

Hampstead, NC

Amy Rutherford (46) is a single mother who works hard to provide for herself and her daughter Morgan (16). She loves her job as a fire and rescue technician. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, shopping, and taking cruises.

In 2015, Amy started having trouble with her hearing. She visited an ear specialist who discovered fluid in her ears. To drain the fluid, she had tubes put in. Unfortunately, Amy started experiencing extreme sensitivity to exterior and internal sounds. She would constantly hear her heartbeat in her head. She also suffered from dizziness and ear aches. In December 2017, Amy went back to the specialist to discuss her growing concerns. The specialist determined she was suffering from semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, a very rare disorder that causes the bone between brain and ear canal to deteriorate.

Amy’s condition caused her to permanently lose 35 percent of her hearing. To correct the condition, she will need to undergo surgery to lift the brain and remove and replace the deteriorated bone. She is scheduled to receive the surgery on April 26 to repair her right ear. Once she heals, she will undergo a second procedure to correct the left side. “The worst part has been waiting to have the surgery, fearing the unknown, and wondering what life will be like after the surgery,” said Amy.

Between her multiple doctor visits and upcoming surgeries, Amy’s medical bills have quickly mounted. In need of financial assistance, she hopes to raise $10,000 through RedBasket.org to relieve some of the medical debt. “If my goal was fulfilled, it would just make the hardship of things so much easier,” Amy said. Let’s provide much needed financial relief for this single mother as she prepares for surgery and follow-up care by making a tax-deductible donation. Share her story today!
