Since 2013, local nonprofit Bike Walk Greenville has been advocating for safe bicycling and walking connectivity. To enhance their mission, they hope to build the Lakeview Link to help make their community a safer and healthier place to live for local students and residents.
The Lakeview Link project is in a partnership with Greenville County that will allow students at Lakeview Middle School (LMS) and the neighboring community safe access to the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail (SRT) network. The SRT provides healthy transportation and recreation options to the 575 students of LMS.
Because of the high number of LMS students who bike to school, the school has an active chapter of the Momentum Bike Club (MBC). This club allows students to be able to experience many areas around Greenville for the first time all while learning safe bicycling skills. Currently, without the Lakeview Link, students must confront four lanes of high-speed traffic to reach the SRT.
Bike Walk Greenville hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to make the Lakeview Link vision a reality. Raising these funds will help provide needed active transportation options to the community. “In order to build the Lakeview Link, we must raise $100,000 by July 1, and we have about $37,000 left to raise,” said Executive Director and treasurer, Frank Mansbach.
