The Story

Osceola, IN

Lawrence (41) and Marise (42) Davis are proud parents of two boys, Derek (24) and Hunter (5). They enjoy going on fishing trips as a family. Hunter loves playing with and taking apart vacuum cleaners. He was recently diagnosed with autism. Despite the challenges his health presents, his family works together to help him overcome them.

Growing up, Hunter’s parents noticed that he was developing slower than other kids his age. They initially thought he could possibly have autism when he was two years old. In August 2017, they took him in to get checked where he was formally diagnosed with autism, ADHD, and anxiety. His autism causes a lot of sensory issues that makes functioning every day difficult. Loud or sudden noises bother him. He has a hard time focusing and comprehending things. His anxiety only adds more stress and can lead to him having a meltdown.

Northern Indiana Service Dogs (NISD) of Plymouth, Indiana specializes in training service dogs for their clients’ individual needs. Marise has been working with NISD to secure an autism anchor service dog for Hunter. They recently picked out his service dog, Ben, which will be specially trained to distract him before he has a meltdown and will help him refocus. Ben will also track him if Hunter should wander off. Most importantly, his service dog will provide a canine companion that will ease his anxiety.

The specialized training and other fees for Hunter’s autism service dog will cost $7,000. His parents hope to raise necessary funds through RedBasket.org. “His quality of life will be greater because he will feel more secure and have help staying focused,” Marise said. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help band together Hunter and Ben as they take on life together. Share his story today!
