The Story

Cornelia, GA

Habersham Medical Center in Habersham County, Georgia is dedicated to offering access to a broad range of quality services along with exceeding the expectations of the patients. The medical center provides the Habersham Home as a long-term healthcare facility for individuals undergoing various therapy treatments and serves as a nursing home for individuals needing daily care. Over the years, local church groups and other caring citizens have visited the nursing homes to volunteer and spend time with the senior residents. Many often share their musical talents to entertain and bring fresh life to the nursing home.

Habersham Home provides instruments for patients and visitors to play. However, many of the instruments have worn down over the years, and the hospital has been unable to replace them. During a recent visit, volunteer J. Michael Shirley noticed an old piano in the dining room. When he began to play, he cringed at every out-of-tune note. At the completion of the song, he turned around to a parade of wheelchair-bound residents rolling into the room. “I've done volunteer work in nursing homes over the years, and I have seen the benefit of music and other entertainment in the lives of the residents,” he said.

In partnership with other community members, J. Michael began researching for new possible instruments to replace the older ones. He hopes to raise $5,800 through RedBasket.org to purchase two Yamaha Clavinova digital pianos for the Habersham Home. “This campaign will offer the opportunity for patients and the community to participate in bringing some joy and comfort through musical entertainment,” said J. Michael. Let’s band together to help provide new instruments and more uplifting music for the seniors and patients of the Habersham Home!
