The Story

Santa Ana, CA

Kimberlee Shanks (35) comes from a loving family of five. She has always worked hard and lives an independent life. She is the secretary of First Love Church in Costa Mesa, California while also working full-time in an insurance accounting department. From birth, Kimberlee has dealt with spastic cerebral palsy, but she has tried to remain as independent as possible.

Kimberlee’s cerebral palsy caused her muscles to tighten and joints to become stiff which makes it hard for her to move. With limited mobility, she must use a walker. Her family and friends have been very supportive and help out wherever she may need assistance. In February 2017, Kimberlee suffered a fall and fractured her right shoulder. Being right-handed, the injury made performing daily tasks even more challenging.

To ensure she always has the help she needs, Kimberlee looked into getting assistance in the form of a canine companion. She was approved to receive a mobility assistance service dog through Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California. Her service dog will enable her to be more mobile and independent in day-to-day life. Her Little Angel will be trained to retrieve items that are hard to reach, open doors, and provide stability when moving.

In order to be placed with a service pup, Kimberlee must be able to cover the cost of the specialized training which is $24,000. She’s already raised $9,000, and hopes to raise the remaining $15,000 through RedBasket.org. “This dog will give me my independence back, and I won’t have to rely on people as much,” Kimberlee said. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and help keep Kimberlee moving with her mobility assistance dog. Share her story today!
