Religious Community Services (RCS) is a faith-based organization that addresses the basic needs of the New Bern, North Carolina community by providing food, clothing and shelter to those who need it most. Two of their core services are the community food pantry and soup kitchen. Opened in 1982, the food programs provide food assistance for anyone in need of food. In 2016, RCS helped nearly 4,000 households through their food service program.
Open Monday through Friday, the RCS food pantry provides a week’s worth of food for families in need to take home and prepare. The pantry offers non-perishable food items like cereal, canned fruits, canned vegetables, and pasta which are received primarily through donations. For those in need of immediate food assistance, the soup kitchen serves hot meals every day.
The food pantry has seen a dramatic decrease in food donations and in the amount of food that is retrieved over the past few months. With limited resources, RCS has been forced to reduce the number of families they assist. “If there is no food, people go hungry,” said Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator Susan Lucas. RCS hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to purchase non-perishable food items for the food pantry. Let’s replenish the RCS food pantry by making a tax-deductible donation and allow them to continue providing food assistance to those in need. Share this story today!
