The Story

Biloxi, MS

For more than 75 years, the Biloxi Doll and Toy Fund has been giving toys to underprivileged children in the Biloxi, Mississippi, area during the holiday season. With a poverty rate of 31.3 percent, there is a great need in the community for charitable gifts, especially during Christmas.

“We believe every child deserves to receive gifts during the holidays,” said Steven Broussard, president of the Biloxi Doll and Toy Fund Board.

The organization was originally started by a group of ladies and has been passed down to different organizations through the years until a Gulf Coast family took it on as their own. To identify the children to participate, the group sends forms to local school nurses, who pass them out to the kids in need. The children take the forms home to their parents, who fill them out with the number of children in the household aged 10 and under. The parents then receive a voucher to bring to distribution day so they can pick up two toys for each child in their home. More than 800 children received toys in 2017, and the number is expected to continue to grow.

“Each year, we have to purchase between 1600 and 1800 items to ensure each child receives something,” Steven said.

In years past, the toys were purchased using donations from community organizations and interest earned from funds leftover from previous years. Additionally, the proceeds from The Shrimp Bowl, a local charity football game, were donated. Unfortunately, the group can no longer purchase all the toys they need with these donations, so they have turned to RedBasket.org to raise funds for the 2018 event.

The Biloxi Doll and Toy Fund hopes to raise $13,000 to purchase a variety of toys to hand out to children during the 2018 holiday season. “Getting started now will help us estimate what we’ll be able to purchase when the times comes to meet with toy vendors,” Steven said. Your tax-deductible donation will help children in need celebrate the holidays and ease their parent’s financial worries. Donate and share their story today!

Thank you all for your generous support during the first 45 days of our campaign! We did not meet our goal in that time, but we did raise 26% which is a great achievement. Luckily, RedBasket.org has allowed us to republish our campaign for another 45 days.

What does this mean for you? There's now more time to share this story with your friends. The most successful fundraisers are the ones that many people have the opportunity to see, so we're asking you to please share our story on your social media channels.

Again, we truly appreciate your support for the Doll and Toy Fund, and we hope that we can raise the remaining $9,555 during this time. Thank you!
