The Story

Kennett, MO

Crystal and Conner Henson are loving parents of a 19-month-old baby boy, Cade. However, this little family received a scare two weeks before Crystal’s due date. She was involved in a car wreck, but luckily there was no apparent damage to her or the baby. She was sent home and put on bed rest, but her blood pressure continued to rise which led her to getting induced.

After a difficult 28 hours of labor, baby Cade was born. However, their beautiful baby began experiencing seizures just hours after birth. Cade was transferred to St. Louis Children’s Hospital where he underwent tests and scans. Test results revealed that he had a left brain stroke. He spent a month in the neonatal intensive care unit being monitored and treated until he was stable enough to go home.

When Cade was five months old, he began experiencing uncontrollable seizures again. He underwent a left functional hemispherectomy brain surgery to disconnect the entire left side of his brain and prevent him from having seizures. While the surgery was successful in managing his seizures, the procedure came with life changing side effects. He now suffers with paralysis in his right arm, hand, and semi-paralysis in his right leg. He went through daily rigorous physical therapy, but he only regained about 10 percent of his function.

Cade continues to have difficulties doing anything for himself because he is only able to fully function the left side of his body. “Cade is 19 months old and cannot stand up, crawl, or walk like other children his age,” Crystal said. His parents recently discovered a customized, wearable electrical stimulation device for his arm and leg that has a significant chance of giving him some use of his arm and leg. The wearable sleeves can be used to manage the effects of muscle paralysis and pain at the same time.

To cover the cost of the BioSleeves, Crystal and Connor hope to raise $9,600 through RedBasket.org. “If Cade was able to receive the BioSleeve, it would change his life,” Crystal said. “The BioSleeve usage could mean the difference between going to normal school and being allowed to play with his peers without fear of being too different.” Help equip Cade with this life changing device by making a tax-deductible donation and sharing his story today!
