The Story

Pomaria, SC

Hannah Coker (21) has a passion for traveling, enjoys shopping, and loves spending time with family and friends. Her loved ones would describe her as a busy bee. Whether it was working one of her two jobs, spending time with family and friends, or attending WoodmenLife chapter meetings, Hannah was always on the go. Unfortunately, given her recent diagnosis, Hannah’s life has changed drastically.

In mid-October, Hannah started to notice bruises on her body that would not go away. At first she brushed it off, but then she started to develop dark purple rashes all over her body. On Saturday, October 28, Hannah’s heart started racing, but would stop after a few minutes. As the day went on, it got worse, and by Saturday night, it would not stop. “I got my mother to take my blood pressure which was good, but my resting heart rate was in the low 100s,” said Hannah. Given the severity of these symptoms, Hannah’s family took her to the emergency room.

After meeting with an oncologist, Hannah was informed that she could have leukemia. To rule out a leukemia diagnosis and better understand what was going on, she had a bone marrow biopsy done on October 30. This revealed that Hannah had a rare blood failure disorder called aplastic anemia.

Hannah’s diagnosis came as a shock to her family and friends. She looked like a perfectly healthy 21-year-old. She was constantly on the go and loved staying busy. Her family couldn’t believe everything she was able to do while being so sick. However, through her battle with aplastic anemia, Hannah has been blessed with an amazing support system who has constantly rallied around her.

Being diagnosed with aplastic anemia has turned Hannah’s life upside down. She went from working full time, traveling, and being able to do a lot of activities without much rest to barely having the energy to get out of bed. Due to the severity of her condition, Hannah had to resign from both of her jobs, leaving a tremendous financial strain on her.

With medical bills that could total over $75,000, Hannah and her family hope to relieve some of that cost by raising $20,000 through RedBasket.org. These funds will be used to offset the cost of medical bills and travel to and from treatments. Hannah is facing blood and platelet transfusions and will need a bone marrow transplant. Raising these funds will allow Hannah to be able to focus on healing without the added stress of medical bills piling up. “After my bone marrow transplant, it is hoped that I will be able to go back to a normal life in about a year,” said Hannah. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help make a tremendous difference in the lives of Hannah and her family. Donate and share her story today!

Here I sit, wired as can be from the steroids I have to take with chemo. I’m also getting platelets, blood and antibiotics tonight/this early morning. Here’s to a sleepless night!

{Not so} Happy New Year cont. |

I tolerated the cyclophosphamide as best as I could besides some dizziness and sinus-y problems. Other than that, I feel decent for having poison in my body. Hoping the next 3 days will be as smooth as today!

{Not so} Happy New Year |

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t been updating much. Things have been uneventful as possible for having to meet with doctors, having labs drawn, transfusions, etc.....until Sunday. Saturday and Sunday I felt pretty rough along with having lower fevers. After receiving blood and platelets on Sunday, I was admitted to Carolina Medical Center with neutropenic fevers. Basically that means that I had something going on but they really couldn’t find any infections or bad bacteria in me. After going over 48 hours with no fevers and having an arsenal of antibiotics in my body, I was given the green light to start chemo this morning. I received a high dose of “high cy” aka cyclophosphamide along with some steroids and anti nausea medicine. The steroids were put into my PICC line and gave me a prickly sensation all over my body which quickly went away
