The Story

Long Beach, CA

Michelle Hopkins (13) is a delightful, determined, tough, courageous, confident, out-going and friendly young girl. She is loved and appreciated by those who get to know her, and she seems to know just about everyone. Her family is very supportive and has tried to help her live the best life possible despite her many health challenges.

At birth, Michelle seemed like every other baby. Her parents noticed that her spine had a little outward curve, but her pediatrician said that she would grow out of it. At one year old, an x-ray of the bump on her back revealed Michelle was suffering from mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I), a rare genetic disease that causes progressive damage throughout the body. The most noticeable effect of her condition is in her bone and soft tissue development which results in significant stiffness in her joints and skeletal deformities.

While there is no cure for MPS, modern medicine developed treatments that have improved Michelle’s quality of life. For years, she was able to do many of the activities she loved and could keep up with her peers. She was in a dance class, gymnastics, and performed in recitals. Over the years, Michelle has slowed down and her brother is always there to give her an extra hand when needed.

On December 30, 2014, Michelle’s life changed forever. She underwent spinal decompression surgery which left her temporarily paralyzed from the neck down. While she has managed to relearn some basic motor skills, Michelle must rely on a wheelchair and walker for mobility. “Life will always be harder for Michelle, but she is tough and sweet enough to make the most out of a difficult reality,” Lynn said. She is unable to do many of the activities she loves such as dancing and gymnastics, but she does them in her own way. With high school approaching, she is looking forward to participating in programs with kids her own age.

To allow her to be more independent in day-to-day life, Michelle’s parents are working with Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California to get her a mobility assistance dog. Her service dog will be trained to provide mobility support and help retrieve items. Her parents hope to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to begin the training process of her Little Angel. You can help make this dream a reality for Michelle by making a tax-deductible donation and sharing her story today!

“Michelle will never be able to do the simple things that most people take for granted, but she will be able to do things with her dog that most people with her condition wish they could do,” Lynn said. Michelle and her mobility assisting dog will be a superhero duo!”
