The Story

Tupelo, MS

Robyn Hickerson (36) has been happily married to the love of her life, Ron (38), for 16 years. Together they have a son, Ronnie Lee (7), whom they absolutely adore. Ron works full-time to support the family while Robyn homeschools Ronnie Lee. During their free time, the Hickersons enjoy supporting athletics. Whether it’s cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes or tossing around a ball at home, the family has a love for football. Unfortunately, due to Robyn’s condition, she is unable to attend games and play with her husband and son.

When Robyn was in middle school, she started to notice pain in her joints. As she grew older, the pain persisted and never went away. After years of seeing several doctors, in 2010 she found one that changed everything. Through various tests and procedures, Robyn learned she would need to undergo a back fusion. The back fusion helped Robyn be able to walk and carry on, but it led to an extreme amount of pain in her hips. After meeting with her doctor in Memphis, Robyn was directed to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida where she learned she would have to undergo a double hip replacement.

While in Jacksonville for her first appointment, Robyn was told that along with the double hip replacement, there were also concerns with her back fusion. “My spine has multiple compressing fractures,” said Robyn. Over the coming months, doctors will address conditions including: avascular necrosis, osteoporosis, bone spurs, cysts, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis.

Robyn’s condition has affected her mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. “I stopped growing early on and never made it over 4 foot 2 inches tall,” said Robyn. Growing up, she was constantly left out; however, with the tremendous amount of support from family, friends, and her faith, Robyn has remained positive.

Robyn and her loved ones hope to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to offset the cost of medical bills and cover travel expenses to and from treatments. Raising these funds would allow Robyn to focus on her recovery journey without the added stress of medical bills and most of all, it would allow her to regain her independence and be able to play with her son. “I want to be able to say ‘yes’ to the things I am unable to do now. I want to be an active member of society and feel like my story can help other people. I want to experience a day without pain,” said Robyn. Donate and share her story today!
