The Story

St. Marys, GA

The Helping Hands Food Pantry (HHFP) was founded in 2000 when members of St. Mary’s United Methodist Church recognized the level of need in their community. Their mission was to join the fight against hunger and to promote self-sufficiency in Camden County, Georgia. For the past 17 years, they have done just that, but due to the ever-increasing numbers of families they serve, the pantry needs some help of their own.

“We provide groceries, so our clients are able to cook and enjoy their time with loved ones on Christmas,” said Beth Tipper, director of the HHFP. According to Feeding America, a nationwide network of nonprofit food banks, 7,070 people in Camden County experienced food insecurity in 2015. In 2016, the HHFP served 4,097 of these community members. Another element of the pantry’s service is providing “next step” resources for their clients, such as lists of available jobs and other educational materials. Through their dedication and hard work, the HHFP strives to help those in need to truly improve every aspect of their lives.

With the annual increase of clients that comes with the holiday season, the caring folks at Helping Hands Pantry are determined to serve as many hungry people as possible. In efforts to afford such extraordinary service, they have established an online fundraising campaign through RedBasket.org. They hope to raise $1,000. This money would be used to buy turkeys, potatoes, green beans, bread, desserts, and other food items to ensure a substantial holiday meal to those who would otherwise go without.

There is plenty to be thankful for this holiday season, and the Helping Hands Food Pantry is doing their part to pay the gratitude forward. “Each day brings new opportunities to help our clients and community,” said Beth. “We like to be organic in our approach and are open to making a difference every day.” Support the Helping Hands Food Pantry today!
