The Story

Los Angeles, CA

The Burrito Project is a group of friends who meet weekly to commune with one another and share quality food, clean water, blankets, socks, and toiletry kits with the disenfranchised people of Los Angeles, California and the surrounding areas. Alan Pinel discovered the Burrito Project 10 years ago and eventually started his own chapter to help the needy in South Pasadena. Since their first event in 2009, The South Pasadena Burrito Project has passed out over 250,000 burritos.

The Burrito Project hosts distribution events every third Thursday of the month. At that time, volunteers gather together and distribute handmade burritos, water bottles, and other items to the homeless in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles. For December and January, the main event will be themed Fleece Navidad where they plan to distribute blankets. “With the cooler weather in Los Angeles, our biggest request from the homeless on the street was for blankets,” Alan said.

To meet the growing needs, Alan and the Burrito Project volunteers hope to give away 1,000 blankets along with 1,000 burritos and bottled water. He hopes to raise $6,200 through RedBasket.org to purchase fleece blankets, food items to make the burritos, and water bottles. “We have been inspired by others before us, and we hope our mission acts as a jump start to your sense of charity and you become active in your own city and surrounding community,” said Alan.
