The Story

Phillips, NE

Katie (33) and Ryan (34) Soto are proud and loving parents to three young children. Their oldest, Kinsley (5), enjoys school and gymnastics. Their second child, Bryant (3), loves to play catch with a football and run around with his cousins. Karsyn (11 months), the youngest, enjoys being out in the sun, going for walks in her stroller, and watching her siblings play. However, in August 2017, the Soto family’s lives changed drastically.

When Karsyn was born, she was a perfectly healthy baby who was developing normally until August 25, 2017. On this day, Ryan received a call from the daycare provider saying that Karsyn had been twitching. As soon as he arrived, they immediately had to call an ambulance because Karsyn was having a seizure. When paramedics arrived, they drove the Sotos to the Emergency Department in Grand Island. From there, they were flown to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska where the family was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

After doctors ran numerous tests on Karsyn, the results came back normal. “There are still so many unanswered questions. We still don’t know what caused the seizure,” said Katie. When Karsyn was able to breathe on her own, she was moved out of the PICU to the regular floor of the hospital. “We still worry about her having another seizure, especially because we do not yet know the cause of the first one,” said Katie.

“Karsyn’s condition has made me appreciate and be thankful for each and every day that we are given. It has made me more open in my faith,” said Katie. Unfortunately, Karsyn’s condition has also given Katie a lot of worry and sadness in her heart. “I worry about my baby girl and her future,” said Katie. However, throughout this battle, Katie and Ryan have remained strong for all three of their children.

The Sotos hope to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to offset the cost of Karsyn’s medical bills, treatments, and travel expenses to and from appointments. Raising these funds would allow the Soto family to focus on Karsyn’s healing journey without the added stress of medical bills piling up. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help make a difference in the lives of Karsyn and her family. Donate and share their story today!
