I have gone from being an energetic, eager, and active participant in life to being an observer who must make a plan for each activity I do.

The Story

Astoria, OR

Barry (71) and Jane (69) Kuiper have been happily married for 27 years and live in rural northern Oregon. He loves taking going on road trips to see the country. He was once an avid golfer and softball player until his health began to wane.

In 2016, Barry fell ill with pneumonia twice. He was later diagnosed with stage 3 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. As his condition became more severe, he began using oxygen tanks while he slept and progressed to needing oxygen at all hours of the day.

Barry’s diagnosis has completely changed his life. Due to lack of energy and limited availability of oxygen, he easily gets fatigued. He is unable to go on the road trip adventures he once loved because he must constantly have oxygen tanks with him. “I have gone from being an energetic, eager, and active participant in life to being an observer who must make a plan for each activity I do,” Barry said. To provide some more independence, he recently discovered a portable oxygen machine that would allow him to go out for extended periods of time without fear of running out of oxygen.

Barry and Jane hope to raise $4,000 through RedBasket.org to purchase the Inogen One G3 system. “I would be able to leave the house whenever I wanted for as long as I wanted,” said Barry. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and give him back his freedom and independence to while also receiving the oxygen he needs. Share his story today!
