The Story

Spencer, TN

Van Buren County Middle/High School is a small, rural school with approximately 420 students. As a beacon for educational and cultural growth, teachers prepare their students to be successful citizens and meaningful contributors to their families and community. In a community with high poverty levels and limited funding, the school provides as much as they can for their students have a well-rounded education.

The school library plays an important role to the schools mission by bringing together the staff and students and sparking creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. Through building information literacy skills and nurturing research and inquiry, the school hopes all of the students gain a lifelong love of reading. Unfortunately, many of the books and materials are fairly outdated especially the science and technology material.

“As part of the curriculum in the middle school and beyond, reading nonfiction text is a requirement,” said Susan Blankenship, school librarian. “Students need to have up-to-date and relevant materials, which makes providing current materials very important.”

In need of financial support, Susan hopes to raise $800 through RedBasket.org to purchase books for the science and technology section of the library. “With updated materials, I can continue to instill a love of reading to my students and lead them into a discovery of science and technology materials,” Susan said. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation and help provide new books for the students of Van Buren County Middle/High School. Share this story today!
