The Story

Lincoln, NE

Katie Hammond (31) is a loving wife with a passion for teaching and a heart for animals. She works as an eighth-grade science teacher at Mickle Middle School in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her dedication to her students goes beyond the classroom. She stays active coaching volleyball, science quiz bowl, and Science Olympiad. Outside of the classroom, Katie and her husband Brian both volunteer with Domesti-PUPS where they foster and work with their service dogs in training.

Throughout Lincoln Public Schools, Edu-PUPS and their teams have a strong presence in the classroom. Edu-PUPs, also referred to as therapy dogs, can be found in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the district. Over the last few years, Katie has had the opportunity to foster service dogs in her eighth-grade science class at Mickle Middle School. The work she has done with therapy dogs and with her students allowed her to win the Air Force Association Teacher of the Year award for the state of Nebraska.

Due to Katie’s work with dogs in the classroom, she has seen firsthand the benefits of having an Edu-PUP. “Behavior has improved, grades have gone up, and having Libby in our school has created a sense of camaraderie amongst the students and staff,” said Katie. When Libby is present in the classroom, she is in her element. She is a calming presence and can often sense if a student is having a bad day. When she senses this, she will lay against them to help reassure them. “Just a look at her makes me smile, even when I feel sad,” said a student.

Katie hopes to raise $3,000 through RedBasket.org to get Libby fully funded to serve as a permanent Edu-PUP for Lincoln Public Schools. “She will come to school with me daily to work with our students. When opportunities arise, she will also be used in the Lincoln community in a variety of different capacities,” said Katie. Libby will not only serve as a canine companion, but she will help students with mental health, emotional health, and academic performance. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help enrich the lives of Mrs. Hammond’s class and other LPS students for years to come. Donate and share her story today!

We're so close! |

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to and shared our project! With several offline donations, we are so close to reaching our goal!!! You guys have been absolutely AMAZING! Libby has settled into a routine with us and goes to school every day now, and has been a huge influence on the kids! A couple weeks ago, Libby was able to get one particular student (who hates PE!) to get involved with their school pacer, and he actually ran a mile! Being able to run/walk with a dog helped get him active with the rest of the school. These kinds of things happen every day with Libby, and she loves every minute of the attention she gets :-)
