The Story

Seattle, WA

College student Emily has a strong bond with her family who has always been supportive. She is currently attending school in Seattle, Washington. As an athlete throughout high school, team culture has played a large role in her life. The support system of her family, teammates, and coaches have been invaluable to her, especially when she is struggling to face the day because of her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Emily has struggled with depression and anxiety after going through a traumatic event in the eighth grade. In high school, her mental health continued to decline as she began experiencing vivid flashbacks, terrifying panic attacks, and bouts of deep depression that left her flat and withdrawn. With the support of her friends and family, she began seeking medical help and visited multiple therapists. Emily was officially diagnosed with major depression and PTSD during her sophomore year of college.

“Through therapy and lots of loving support, I am developing stronger coping mechanisms and have been more able to reach out to friends and loved ones when I need help,” Emily said. “But there are still days when I feel limited, unable to interact with the world the way that I want to.”

To regain her independence, Emily recently reached out and was approved to receive a psychiatric assistance dog through Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California. The service dog will be trained to sense when she is beginning to have a panic attack or flashback and provide a calming presence to ease the anxiety. Her Little Angel will also be able to provide boundary control and lead around corners to alert the handler if someone is on the other side. “Having a Little Angel by my side would help me along my road to recovery and allow me to experience life to the fullest,” Emily said.

While a service dog can be life changing, the cost for the extensive training is around $24,000. Emily hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to offset the costs and begin the training process. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help Emily experience the security and companionship of a psychiatric service dog. Share her story today!
