The Story

Panama City Beach, FL

Josie Howard (7) is a playful, young girl with a heart for animals. Whether it’s coloring, playing with her stuffed animals, playing soccer, or going swimming, Josie is always on the go. However, due to her battle with anxiety, Josie is unable to live a carefree life like other children her age.

When Josie was growing up, her family noticed she was anxious quite a bit. At age five, Josie’s mom, Becky and dad, Chris, noticed her anxiety started to become more severe. After a visit with her doctor, he agreed that Josie suffered from severe anxiety. Her diagnosis didn’t come as a surprise to her family. “We all have just wanted to help her as much as we can,” said Becky.

Josie’s anxiety has limited her in many ways. She is afraid to try new things, meet new people, and can become paralyzed with fear if she isn’t able to calm down her anxieties. If she dwells on this, it can become an anxiety attack. Due to the level of her anxiety, she has difficulty sleeping at night due to nightmares and concerns she has during the middle of the night. “Her anxiety keeps her from living a normal seven-year-old life,” said Becky.

After doing some research, the Howard family felt like their prayers had been answered. They came across an organization called Little Angels Service Dogs. Little Angels trains service animals to serve as not only a companion, but also perform duties to help the individual they serve. In Josie’s case, the dog would be able to help her confidence in social situations, make her feel safe, and provide deep pressure therapy when she is having an anxiety attack or nightmare. “A dog would mean more independence for Josie and a whole new world of opportunities as she’s getting older and starting to do things without mom or dad there,” said Becky.

Josie’s family hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to offset the cost of a service dog through Little Angels Service Dogs. A service animal would provide Josie with endless support to help her through her anxiety battle. “It would help Josie be more independent, less anxious, and more confident,” said Becky. By making a tax-deductible donation to Josie’s story, you can help make a difference in the lives of not only Josie, but also her family. Donate and share her story today!
