The Story

newport beach, CA

Isabella Navarretta (19) is an artist and musician who loves the ocean and anything that involves being in the water like surfing and swimming. Her faith is an essential component of her life and has been therapeutic on hard days. She must now rely on her faith even more as she deals with the effects of a traumatic brain injury.

From a young age, Isabella was dedicated to playing water polo at the highest level. She started playing when she was 12 and would often practice with boys older than her. In 2012, she was hit in the back of the head and suffered her first concussion. She eventually bounced back and made the varsity team at her high school. Unfortunately, she suffered a second concussion that required her to be rushed to the emergency room. As she recovered, her grades and ability to concentrate gradually declined. Isabella spent significant time Children's Hospital of Orange County undergoing neurological testing before being diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.

Isabella suffered two additional concussions which ended her water polo career and changed her life. In a constant state of fear and anxiety, she has developed acute post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which can cause her to break out in panic attacks if her body is put under too much stress. “My injuries and experiences have been difficult and painful, but I am thankful for them because each one has humbled me more,” Isabella said. She tries to manage her condition as best she can, but has been looking for a more permanent solution that will allow her to regain her independence.

After years of thorough research, Isabella was recently approved to receive a psychiatric assistance dog through Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California. Her service dog will be specially trained to sense when she is beginning to have a panic or anxiety attack and will help ease her nerves. Having her dog will also allow her to go out without fear. “I know I will be a mess when I receive my pup because I can finally have the ultimate tool to being myself and live the life I dream of,” said Isabella.

Isabella hopes to raise $18,000 through RedBasket.org to cover the cost of her psychiatric service dog. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help Isabella regain her independence with the life changing assistance of her Little Angel. Share her story today!
