In 2000, the Weimar Future Farmers of America (FFA) officers came together to form what is known today as the Weimar We CAN Community Food Bank. With the help of devoted staff, donors, and volunteers, the organization worked to ensure that children struggling with food insecurity would be fed during the summer months.
“This is the only FFA-student/member-run food pantry in the nation,” said Weimar FFA President, Addison Elstner.
The mission of Weimar FFA is to provide food and other goods to those in the Weimar community who are in need. Weimar We CAN Community Food Bank assists approximately 984 families a year, which is equivalent to 3,744 family members. However, with over 15 percent of the population struggling with food insecurity in Colorado County, Texas, the food bank is always in need of donations. The more donations they receive, the more individuals and families they will be able to help.
In partnership with WoodmenLife Texas Chapter 7, Weimar FFA hopes to raise $10,000 through RedBasket.org to purchase incontinence products, canned, dried, and paper goods for their food bank. By raising these funds, the food bank would be able to continue fighting food insecurity in the Weimar, Texas community. “This is a way to help those that are not as fortunate as we are, and it is a way to give back to the community that has given, and that continues to give so much to us,” said Addison. This fundraiser is part of the Fighting Hunger Challenge. During the third quarter of 2017, WoodmenLife and RedBasket.org are partnering to support our National Community Focus of Fighting Hunger. WoodmenLife chapters are encouraging community hunger relief organizations to fundraise through RedBasket.org and raise money to purchase supplies and provide meals for their communities.
