Skylar Ponder (5) is a fun and loving little girl. She loves playing with puzzles, tumbling around the house, and playing at the park with her mother, Jeneana. From birth, her mother noticed that she had development challenges compared to other toddlers her age. Now, that she is getting older, Jeneana is seeking a way to improve Skylar’s quality of life.
When Skylar was two years old, she was diagnosed with developmental delay which is an ongoing delay in the process of developing speech, cognitive functions, and social and emotional functions. She was also diagnosed with expressive and receptive language disorder which makes it difficult for her to communicate with others. Since being diagnosed, Skylar meets regularly with a speech pathologist, school psychologist, and special education team. She has been sent home from school numerous times because of anxiety that causes her to get frustrated and shut down. Since she gets easily overwhelmed, she has a very limited amount of friends. Sleeping throughout the night is also challenging for her.
To improve Skylar’s independence, Jeneana recently started working with Lily Grace Service Dogs to get Skylar a service dog. Lily Grace Service Dogs provides fully trained service dogs tailored to the recipient’s specific needs. Skylar’s canine companion will be trained to sense when she is becoming anxious and help relieve her stress.
Jeneana hopes to raise $13,300 through RedBasket.org to cover the cost of Skylar’s service dog expenses. “A service dog would be amazing for Skylar,” Jeneana said. “Skylar will be able to get an emotional support dog to help her regulate her emotions, soothe her, and serve as her voice when she cannot.” Support Skylar in her journey to receive a life changing service dog by making a tax-deductible donation.
