Freeport, Florida, is proud to be surrounded by Eglin Air Force Base. Unfortunately, over the years, five young Freeport men have been killed while fighting in wars and the city had gone decades with no veteran tribute of any kind. This prompted the Freeport Veterans Memorial group to be founded in 2010 to take on a project to complete a memorial to honor these heroes. “The response was amazing,” said Freeport Veterans Memorial Chair, Tim Ard.
After years of hard work, the group is on the last phase of construction and is finally ready to unveil the memorial. However, they are in need of funds to make this project a reality.
The mission of Freeport Veterans Memorial is to promote community pride and civic responsibility by supporting the beautification and education of Freeport. Since 2010, dedicated staff and volunteers from the community have worked diligently to get this site completed. Having this memorial completed will allow it to be marketed as a full veteran’s memorial to the hundreds of thousands of people that visit the Florida beaches.
Freeport Veterans Memorial hopes to raise $40,000 through RedBakset.org to complete the final phase of the “Walk of War” memorial. “This memorial is a huge sense of pride for our community. It is the only veteran’s memorial in our county and will pay tribute to all veterans. We are surrounded by Eglin Air Force Base and it is very fitting that we honor those who serve,” said Tim.
