The Story

Elba, AL

Evergreen Cemetery was established on November 30, 1853. Moses W. Helms and his wife donated 11 acres of land to the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, now known as the Evergreen Primitive Baptist Church, in hopes of providing the community a place of worship and a proper graveyard. The church then deeded the same 11 acres to the City of Elba. Over the years, the local community has provided outstanding support to maintain the cemetery. In fact, the Summer House (or gazebo) found on the property was built by a collaboration of Elba’s women, and additional acres were contributed in 1948 and 1962. On February 12, 2016, the Evergreen Cemetery was added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register.

The cemetery is managed by the Evergreen Perpetual Cemetery Board, a 501 (c)(3) organization. The board usually receives much-needed financial assistance from family members of the deceased and through payments toward burial plots. This assistance is spent on the upkeep of cemetery grounds and any administrative costs. However, with their recently awarded historical status, the Evergreen Cemetery needs help. The board seeks to raise $1,610 to provide the cemetery with an Alabama historical marker, which would both serve to educate the Elba community and to celebrate the cemetery’s rich past.

Maintaining Evergreen’s 21 acres is consistently demanding. Time, money, and unwavering respect are daily requirements for those involved. “They always need money in their account,” said Nell Gilmer, an advocate for the Evergreen Perpetual Cemetery Board. “Ordering a marker from those funds is simply not possible.”

The Evergreen Cemetery has been sacred to the city of Elba and its surrounding areas for over 160 years. The services and plots facilitated by the cemetery continue to honor and commemorate the community’s friends and family members who have passed, ensuring that lost loved ones are not lost in memory. Please consider a tax-deductible contribution to the Evergreen Cemetery’s campaign and help them in their mission to educate visitors and further memorialize their community’s deceased.
