The Story

Houston, TX

Lissa Rezek (25) has always had a special place in her heart for animals. She enjoys feeding birds and aspires to volunteer at local animal shelters. One of the events she looks forward to is her annual trip to Disneyland for Epilepsy Awareness. Being diagnosed with epilepsy has been difficult for Lissa, but she doesn’t let her diagnosis slow her down.

When Lissa was just 15 years old, she was riding in her friend’s car when she experienced her first seizure. This was a scary moment for Lissa and her family because they couldn’t pinpoint why she was having seizures. Lissa tried various medications, diets, and surgeries to stop her seizures but nothing seemed to work. When the Rezeks thought they had exhausted all of their ideas, their prayers were finally answered.

While at Disneyland for epilepsy awareness, Lissa’s mother, Christina, saw a tall poodle being trained. She tried to catch up with the team all day to find out more about the program and the dog’s abilities. When Christina finally caught up with the trainer, she asked if they trained seizure alert dogs and used hand signals. The trainer then taught Lissa a signal and had her show it to the dog. “When the dog did what I asked it to do, my mom started to cry,” said Lissa. Following this special moment, the Rezeks knew they wanted this kind of canine companion to protect Lissa. They applied to Little Angels Service Dogs at the beginning of the next year.

Lissa’s diagnosis of epilepsy has been hard for her. She has seizures daily and has to have someone near her when she sleeps in case she has a seizure overnight. Since her diagnosis, Lissa has not experienced a lot of independence. “A service dog will provide the necessary comfort and protection to help me become more independent,” said Lissa.

Lissa hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to purchase a service dog through Little Angels Service Dogs. A service animal would not only change Lissa’s life, but it could also save her life. “The dog will be able to alert my family if I am going to have a seizure and provide me with assistance by bracing after a seizure,” said Lissa. By making a tax-deductible donation you can help unite Lissa with a canine companion that will get her on her way to achieving independence!

Lissa, with the  help of everyone who donated, has raised the funds for her seizure assistance dog and we are now awaiting placement. This could take some time. We are blessed for all the friends and strangers who helped her achieve this goal.  We will post another update once Lissa gets her dog.
