The Story

Kernersville, NC

McKenzie Cottingham (6) is an energetic little girl who is full of life. She loves to swim, ride her bike, sing, dance, and draw. She spends most of her time playing independently even though she enjoys being around others.

At age two, McKenzie’s parents noticed a delay in her development. “She was easily overstimulated by noises, lights, and people. She struggled with coordination, delayed speech, and fine motor skills,” said McKenzie’s mother, Brandi. Since McKenzie’s diagnosis of a developmental delay, the Cottinghams have worked diligently to find alternative ways to improve her development including speech therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, a specialized learning environment, and most recently, a six-month program at a neurodevelopmental facility.

McKenzie’s diagnosis has since progressed into an intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sensory processing disorder, and she’s scheduled to be tested for autism. Her environmental sensitivities and tendency to get overstimulated in public places presents challenges for the Cottinghams due to safety concerns. “Unaware of potential danger, she’s quick to wander away from us and into unsafe situations, like the street,” said Brandi. With McKenzie’s safety and independence being important, her family has looked into getting her a service dog.

McKenzie was recently approved to receive an autism assistance dog through Little Angels Service Dogs. Her service dog will be trained to prevent her from wandering away, calm her, interrupt repetitive behaviors, and most importantly, provide unconditional love when she needs a friend. These dogs can be life changing, but cost around $24,000 due to the extensive training they must go through. To offset the cost of training, McKenzie’s family hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org.

This dog would not only help McKenzie, but it would also provide a sense of relief and comfort for the whole family. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help unite McKenzie with a canine friend that will provide her with continuous safety and support. Please donate and share McKenzie’s story today!
