The Story

Hartwell, GA

Winfreda Smith has a deep love for the Lord and her family. “I believe He has a plan and a purpose for my life. My desire is to stay sensitive to His spirit and finish the race He has planned for me. I may not win every battle but I will overcome through Him,” said Winfreda. She loves spending time teaching bible studies and spending time with her family in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, due to her current condition, she is unable to do what she loves with the ones she loves.

In November 2016, Winfreda was having medical issues. After going through a CT scan, a mass was found on her kidney. On January 19, 2017, Winfreda was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma on her left kidney. Then on February 28, she went into a surgery that included a partial nephrectomy to remove the cancer mass.

After the surgery, the healing process didn’t go smoothly for Winfreda. She had many complications that included cleaning a wound out and a stent insertion. In May, she was sent to wound care for vacuum therapy. While at vacuum therapy, doctors discovered she had a staph infection.

Unfortunately, the wound therapy did not go as she had hoped. During that time, she was scheduled for additional surgery but could not move forward with it because of renal failure. On July 11, she had her third surgery, which was five hours long, to remove infected tissue and close the wound. On July 29, the wound opened again and she was rushed to the emergency room. When she arrived, her lungs were full of fluid and she was gasping for air. She was in the intensive care unit (ICU) for four days. After the seventh day in the hospital, she was finally well enough to go home where she continues to recover.

“There is not a day that goes by that I am not in pain,” said Winfreda. Due to her condition, she is unable to cook, clean, drive, or partake in other activities by herself. She has also been out of work due to the level of pain she has endured and the amount of doctors’ appointments she has. “Being out of work has taken away my ability to provide for my family. This illness has been financially devastating,” said Winfreda.

Winfreda hopes to raise $6,800 through RedBasket.org to assist with paying medical bills and relieving the financial pressure she and her family have been under. Despite all of the physical, emotional, mental, and financial strain this has put on Winfreda, she still remains positive through everything. “I look forward to the blessing God has in store for me. I’m not sure why I am enduring these trials, but I know He has a plan for me,” said Winfreda. Her faith is what she has held on to through this journey. “Without my faith in God's healing ability, I don’t think I would be here today,” said Winfreda.
