The Story

La Mirada, CA

The Lietzau family is a unique family of five. They love laughing, having fun, and making memories together. Melody (39) and Jason (40) always prioritize their faith and attend Grace Evangelical Free Church in La Miranda, California with their children. Though this loving family has had many medical challenges, they view it as an opportunity to serve and be used by God.

Five years ago, Melody began to struggle with her balance and would fall unexpectedly. She also suffered rapid weight loss and muscle weakness. After her son was diagnosed with heart failure due to muscular dystrophy (MD), they were both genetically tested to determine the specific type. Testing results revealed Melody had desmin myofibrillar myopathy, a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that causes slow progressive muscle weakness.

Melody’s condition has slowly robbed her of her independence as her muscles continue to weaken. She needs help with all day to day activities which led her family to move closer to friends who have provided some assistance. Being reliant on others for everything has been challenging, but it has also made her stronger. “It has made me appreciate so much that I often took for granted,” said Melody. “It has strengthened my trust and dependence on the Lord.”

In October 2016, Melody suffered a serious concussion after she fell at home. With increased anxiety, she reached out to Little Angels Service Dogs of San Diego, California for assistance and is currently in the application process. Melody has applied to receive a mobility assistance dog that will provide stability when she walks and will assist with day-to-day activities. “It is such a huge need for our family and something we have been praying about for some time,” Melody said.

Melody hopes to raise $20,000 through RedBasket.org to cover the cost and begin the training process for her life saving service dog once she has completed the application process. “Meeting our goal of getting a mobility dog will make my life easier and bring joy to our whole family,” she said. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help Melody receive her little angel and regain her independence! Donate and share her story today!
