The Story

Newmarket, NH

Karen loves the outdoors, crafting, baking, photography, and traveling. She has worked for the same company for 17 years, and also volunteers as a dog caregiver. Married to Jason Olivier for twelve years, they have a rescue dog of their own named Pedro. Sadly, Karen’s declining health has prevented her from volunteering as much as she would like.

Karen first began experiencing symptoms in January 2001 when she lost vision in her left eye. Over the next ten months, she began having trouble with balance, numbness, and debilitating fatigue. In November, Karen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) after an MRI revealed a number of lesions on her brain and spine. “The news was life changing,” said Karen. “MS is unpredictable, and even when you do all of the right things there are no guarantees that you will be okay.”

Every day is a struggle as her condition worsens, but Karen tries to lead as normal of a life as possible. She tries to stay active and maintain her career. The progression of her symptoms have slowed due to disease modifying drugs, but the medication is unable to completely stop the progression of her MS. Karen recently discovered hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) which is the only treatment that has successfully stopped the progression of MS.

HSCT is only available in the United States to qualified clinical trial patients. Unfortunately, Karen was not a candidate for a clinical trial and is now seeking another treatment location. In April 2017, Karen is scheduled to receive HSCT treatment at Clinica Ruiz in Monterrey, Mexico. The procedure will take 28 days and costs nearly $55,000, none of which is covered by insurance. Karen along with her family and friends hope to offset the costs of this lifesaving procedure by raising $20,000 through RedBasket.org.

“Karen doesn’t remember what life is like without MS, but she can imagine a day when her fatigue will not stop her from experiencing life,” said family friend, Jill Hilfiker. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can help Karen undergo treatment and recovery without added financial stress. Donate and share her story today!
