Because of my injuries and the bills, every day is a constant reminder of that horrific morning.

Save Jacey's Smile

Thirty-seven-year-old Jacey Gengenbach suffered a brutal attack by her ex-boyfriend. The attack severely injured Jacey’s face and teeth, damaged her home, and left her and her young son emotionally scarred. Jacey needs help paying her health insurance premiums and covering her medical, dental, and therapy bills.

Jacey Gengenbach genuinely cares about the people in her life. She is a single mom raising a 4-year-old son and remains close with her parents in rural Nebraska. She has her own fitness studio in Omaha where, in addition to her regular clientele, she offers specialized exercise programs for clients with Parkinson’s disease.

Jacey faced her own medical struggles in 2011 when doctors discovered a racquetball-sized tumor behind her right eye. Fortunately, the tumor was benign but the ten hour surgery to remove it and reconstruct her face was very expensive. With that hurdle behind her, Jacey made some big accomplishments. She bought her first house and, after 15 years as a fitness trainer, opened her own studio, Fitness & Beyond. In the meantime, her abusive ex-boyfriend resurfaced. For months, his threats and harassment intensified.

On the morning of November 11, 2012, Jacey’s ex-boyfriend pulled into her driveway and repeatedly called her. Jacey called for help. She was on the phone with a 911 operator, inside her locked house with security alarms activated, when the unthinkable happened. She watched out her front window as he drove his van through her closed garage door. He kicked in a dead bolted door, raced upstairs and pummeled Jacey in front of her then 3-year-old son, as security alarms wailed. He focused his attack on her rebuilt eye socket. When police arrived, her ex-boyfriend was calmly walking out of her house. He went to jail. Meanwhile, Jacey was rushed to the emergency room. Her nose and upper jaw were broken. One tooth had been knocked out and many others chipped and loosened from his blows.

Since the attack, Jacey and her son have struggled physically, emotionally and financially. However, Jacey built up the courage to face her abuser at his sentencing last September. “Words cannot adequately express how awful of a feeling it is to not be safe in my own home, to not be able to protect myself, and to not be able to protect my son,” Jacey told the judge through tears. “The one place where most people desire to be and feel safest has been stripped from us.” Her abuser was sentenced to 21 to 25 years in prison.

Jacey now volunteers with a domestic violence organization to use her voice to help others, but she needs some help herself. Even with health insurance, the medical and dental expenses have been overwhelming. She cannot afford to go to therapy right now and has another year of dental work to rebuild her smile. “Because of my injuries and the bills, every day is a constant reminder of that horrific morning,” Jacey said. Meeting her Red Basket goal of $18,750 would help cover her medical, dental and therapy bills, as well as health insurance premiums. Let’s help Jacey and her son put that horrific day behind them and bring back her smile.
